AI agents were given a memory test: how they learn from past mistakes

Letta Labs has unveiled a new benchmark called FrontierMemory to test whether autonomous AI agents can actually learn from their own experiences, rather than simply pulling stored facts from a database. Initial tests have revealed a huge performance gap depending on the infrastructure that powers the agent.

Remembering does not mean learning.

Most current tests only measure an AI's ability to recall facts. However, as Letta co-founder Charles Packer points out, in the age of coding agents, simply reading text is a done deal. The real challenge is continuous learning in contextual space, writes The New Stack.

“If the AI-generated memory is really good, it should actually improve the performance of subsequent tasks,” emphasizes Charles Packer.

The FrontierMemory benchmark assesses this gap. Agents are given transcripts of their previous work (including successful attempts and errors), after which they are asked to form their own “memories” to perform new tasks more effectively.

Test results

In the test of the ability to learn from past mistakes and apply this experience, Letta's own system became the leader:

  • Letta Dream — 73.3%;
  • Prime Agent — 60%;
  • OpenAI Agents SDK — 40%;
  • Claude Managed Agents — 33.3%;
  • Hermes Agent — 26.7%.

Using the same models (GPT-6.1 Sol for memory creation and GPT-6 Sol for task execution), Letta Dream outperformed OpenAI Agents SDK by 60% to 40%. This proves that the agent binding architecture is as important as the language model itself.

The key factor in success was the process of "dreaming" - when the agent reviews past work and transforms the acquired experience into clear instructions or new skills.

Which model creates the best memories?

The researchers also compared 7 leading models in terms of the quality of generating useful memories:

  • Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic) and GLM-5.3 (Z.ai) — 73.3%;
  • Kimi K3 — 66.7%;
  • GPT-6.1 Sol (OpenAI) and Gemini 4 Argon (Google) — 60%;
  • Muse Wonder — 46.7%;
  • Grok 4.7 — 33.3%.

Although Claude Opus 5.5 and GLM-5.3 generate significantly higher quality instructions, OpenAI has a significant price advantage: memory generation on GPT-6.1 Sol costs about $0.77 per task, compared to $2.80 for Opus 5.5 and $3.58 for GLM-5.3.

Interestingly, the high-quality memories created by the more expensive model (Opus 5.5) then help the cheaper model (GPT-6 Sol) perform the task perfectly. This opens the way to hybrid approaches in development.

FrontierMemory 1.0 currently includes only 15 complex coding and analytics tasks. Due to the small sample size, each error is estimated at about 6.7 percentage points. The test authors promise to expand FrontierMemory in future versions, adding longer tasks and support for a multiplayer environment for teamwork between multiple AI agents.
