The founder of Ukrainian startup Nerdish warned about a new fraud scheme against app developers
Ukrainian developer and founder of the Nerdish.io service Andriy Khyzhnyak spoke about an attempted fraud by pseudo-bloggers. Unknown people offer mobile app owners paid promotion on popular YouTube channels for relatively small amounts, after which they disappear with the money.
The IT guy reported this on his page on the social network X (Twitter). According to Khyzhnyak, he received a letter allegedly from the author of a YouTube channel about mobile software, which has about 250,000 subscribers. The attacker offered to make a video review of the application for $100.
The Nerdish founder was alarmed by the low price for an account of this scale. Upon further investigation, it turned out that the sender’s email address had no connection to the actual content creator.
«It looks like an interesting way to breed an army of newly minted owners of apks, of which there are many in the store, but few popular ones, and here is such a chance. And then $100, wow, and the fact that there is no review — go to the police to complain about the email and that you yourself sent the money to the Internet,» the developer noted.
Similar fake marketing schemes are designed for indie developers and budding founders who are looking for affordable ways to promote their own products on the App Store or Google Play and respond to seemingly lucrative offers.
Nerdish is a self-education mobile app launched in 2020. The service offers short, scientifically-based articles on art, history, psychology, technology, and science. In addition to its flagship product, the team also developed the daily history facts app Factorium and the project Grandioso to popularize classical music.
