SpaceX has developed a new “space awareness” system that it is willing to share for free with other operators. How will this affect the overall safety of satellites in space?
SpaceX has developed a new space situational awareness system called Stargaze, which significantly improves the safety of satellite operations in low Earth orbit.
SpaceX has developed a new space situational awareness system called Stargaze, which significantly improves the safety of satellite operations in low Earth orbit.
The company said that the screening data from this system will be made freely available to the entire satellite operator community in the coming weeks.
The need to introduce this system is explained by the fact that current usage practices have increased the risk of satellite collisions, which required improved coordination of space traffic.
«Traditional methods typically only allow for limited observation of objects per day, resulting in large uncertainties in orbital predictions, which are further exacerbated by volatile space weather. Stargaze provides an order of magnitude increase in detection capabilities compared to conventional ground-based systems,» the company notes.
Stargaze reportedly uses data from nearly 30,000 trackers, each of which makes continuous observations of nearby objects.
«These predictions are integrated into the space traffic management platform, which identifies potential approaches between objects in space,» SpaceX says.
It is also reported that to maximize the safety of all satellites in space, SpaceX will provide Stargaze conjunction data free of charge to all operators through its space traffic management platform.
The company also recalled that in late 2025, a Starlink satellite collided with a third-party satellite that was performing maneuvers but whose operator did not share information.
«By providing this service for free, we hope to motivate operators to take similar steps,» SpaceX urged.
