Lenovo Legion Go S becomes the first third-party portable console to receive Valve's SteamOS operating system

Lenovo introduced the Legion Go S laptop at CES 2025 with support for two operating systems at once — Windows 11 and SteamOS. This is the first third-party laptop PC with an official license from Valve.

As Engadget reports, the specifications of the two Legion Go S variants are very similar.

They feature either an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip or the Lenovo Z1 Extreme APU used in the previous model, up to 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 55.5Wh battery. The consoles also feature a microSD card slot for expandable storage, two USB 4 ports, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The main differences are their color and release date, as the Windows 11 Legion Go S comes in white, while the SteamOS model will be available in black.

Compared to the original Legion Go, the S version has a smaller but still large 8-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate (compared to 8.8 inches) with a resolution of 1,920×1,200 and VRR instead of the 2,560×1,600 144Hz of the original. It also doesn’t have detachable controllers or a kickstand. Like the previous version, the Legion Go S will have analog sticks with Hall effect sensors, which competitors like ASUS’s expensive ROG Ally X don’t have.

«We are excited to announce that the Lenovo Legion Go S — Powered by SteamOS™, announced at CES 2025, is the first laptop officially licensed for Valve’s SteamOS. We designed this operating system to deliver a seamless gaming-optimized user experience while still retaining access to the power and multitasking of a PC,» commented Valve, the developers of Steam .

They emphasized that SteamOS is the same operating system that runs the Steam Deck, and its specialists are «debugging it to achieve full support for the Lenovo Legion Go S and provide users of this device with the same flawless experience.»

Valve said it has improved SteamOS compatibility with other portable devices, and the company plans to release a beta version of SteamOS for them before the Legion Go S is released.

«I found it surprising how similar it is to the Steam Deck, despite not being made by Valve. The interface is almost identical, the only difference being some subtle tweaks that Lenovo has added to support things like RGB lighting and a higher 30-watt TDP… However, my biggest discovery is that the Valve OS feels a little faster than on the Steam Deck, which I attribute to the new Legion processor,» noted a journalist who tested the Legion Go S.

The older version of the Legion Go S running Windows 11 is expected to go on sale sometime in late January for $730 with an AMD Z2 Go processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. The 16GB Legion Go S running SteamOS will have a lower starting price of $499, compared to the Windows model, which starts at $599. But those versions won’t be available until May.
