Suno Inc., an American startup known for its AI-powered music generation platform, has raised $400 million in investment. The round values the company at $5.4 billion. This makes Suno the most valuable player among the new generation of AI music services, and the company’s valuation has doubled in just seven months since its previous $250 million funding round.
According to Bloomberg, the lead investor in the round was Bond Capital, which previously funded OpenAI and Kalshi. Venture capital giants IVP, Forerunner, Union Square Ventures, as well as existing investors Lightspeed and Menlo Ventures also joined the funding.
Suno allows users to create full-fledged audio recordings from scratch using simple text prompts. Users can specify genre, mood, instruments, and even generate lyrics, getting a finished track almost instantly. Although the service began as an entertainment application for the general public, it is now increasingly becoming a working tool for professional musicians and creators.
The startup plans to use the funds raised to actively hire specialists and expand its product line. Suno currently has about 200 employees, but plans to increase its staff by 70% by the end of the year. The company’s financial indicators also demonstrate rapid growth: in February, the number of paid subscribers exceeded $2 million, and the company’s annual sales are already approaching $300 million.
«Having more capital allows us to do business differently and take bolder steps. A growing proportion of users are falling in love with the product and coming back to it,» Suno co-founder and CEO Mikey Schulman said in a comment.
The rapid development of generative AI in music is also causing a sharp reaction from the traditional industry. In 2024, the world’s three largest major labels — Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Music Group — sued Suno for copyright infringement, accusing the company of using their catalogs to train models without permission.
However, Suno has already managed to settle the legal dispute with Warner Music and sign a licensing agreement. The companies are currently jointly testing new products that will allow users to legally interact with the Warner catalog. The first such release is expected in the coming months.
Bond Capital general partner Daegwon Che compared Suno’s potential to Claude Code, a tool that allowed people without programming skills to create their own applications. According to him, the startup opens a fundamentally new niche at the intersection of technology and entertainment, based on the active creativity of millions of people, not just professional authors.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
