Ukraine may reintroduce light camouflage due to the threat of Russia's mass use of drones and missiles with the Susanin optical navigation system.
This was announced by the presidential advisor on the development of defense technologies, Sergey Beskrestnov, known as Flash.
According to him, the Russians may begin mass-installing Susanin on Geran-5 drones, other drones, and missiles to use them for night attacks.
If this happens, Ukraine will likely have to turn off the lights to make it harder for the enemy to navigate the terrain. Flash suggests paying special attention to roads and highways.
Susanin is a system that helps a drone find its way without satellite navigation. Instead of relying solely on GPS, the drone can navigate using images of the terrain.
So the drone uses an optical sensor to "look" at the ground and compare what it sees with pre-loaded images. This way, it can determine its location and adjust its route, even if the satellite signal is blocked by electronic warfare.
At night, this becomes more difficult, but illuminated roads, intersections, and other prominent features can help the system recognize the terrain. This is why light cloaking can potentially make it difficult for such drones to navigate.
However, there is currently no official decision on the return of light masking.
Earlier, dev.ua wrote that Elon Musk accused Ukraine of violating the rules for using Starlink due to drone strikes. In response, Serhiy Flesh explained that commercial Starlink terminals have speed restrictions, which, according to him, make them impossible to use for long-range strikes.
