Apple introduces AI-generated tags to the App Store to improve app search
Apple has announced the introduction of App Store tags that will highlight specific features and functionality of an app. While the tags themselves are generated and validated by artificial intelligence, developers will have the final say in which tags are associated with their apps.
Apple has announced the introduction of App Store tags that will highlight specific features and functionality of an app. While the tags themselves are generated and validated by artificial intelligence, developers will have the final say in which tags are associated with their apps.
These tags will initially be generated by Apple’s large-scale language models using various sources, such as app metadata, and will then undergo human review before being applied to the App Store, TechCrunch reports .
Apple users will be able to use these tags when searching for apps in the App Store. They will appear next to categories on the search page and apps that appear in search results.
Apple says the new tags will help uncover information that's often hidden in app listings, such as its App Store description, category, metadata, or even screenshots.
The company believes that tags will help users more easily find apps that offer the functionality they need, and will also give developers a better idea of how their apps are being found.
When users click on one of the tags, they are taken to a new page with a curated collection of all apps and games that offer similar features or capabilities — an extension of the existing App Store feature that points users to apps they “might also like,” located at the bottom of individual listings.
A new information page will appear in App Store Connect where developers can manage tags or remove those they don't want to show on the product page.
Tags aren't the only thing coming to the App Store. Apple says developers will also be able to create their own product pages that will appear when users search for apps using certain keywords. The company is also improving the nutrition labels feature in its apps; expanding the range of age ranges (now five); and extending offer codes to consumables, non-consumables, and non-renewable subscriptions.
