OpenAI adds text messaging capabilities to Dot agents

OpenAI has begun rolling out a new feature for its personal AI agents Dot that allows you to interact with them via regular text messages. It’s currently in beta for Pro users in the US. The update supports both iMessage on iOS and RCS on Android.
Thanks to this, users can send their Dot not only text requests, but also photos and voice notes. In turn, the agent has received an additional channel for proactive communication: it can independently send notifications and updates on completed tasks, writes Engadget.
How it works and how to set it up
To activate, you need to open the agent's profile in ChatGPT, select Texting, and make sure that iMessage (for iPhone) or RCS (for Android) is enabled on your smartphone.
The messaging infrastructure is provided in partnership with Linq. Successful penetration testing ensures data security. OpenAI emphasizes: “Only you can write to your Dot, and your Dot can only write to you.”
Any information that Dot stores in its memory is synchronized between the ChatGPT app and text messages.
By popular request, you can now text your dot. Give it a task to take off your plate or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos, or even voice notes. It will text you proactively with relevant updates. Safe, secure texting via iMessage or RCS. You're the only one who can text your dot, and your dot can only text you. Rolling out now as a preview for Pro users in the US.
The personal agent segment is heating up rapidly, especially after the recent release of Anthropic’s Claude Duet. Now, OpenAI’s Dot is showing greater functional maturity and integration.
Unlike Claude Duet, which is currently limited to a waitlist for US users and is planned to be available as part of the basic Pro subscription for $20/month, Dot agents remain an exclusive feature for higher tier plans (specifically Pro) and are currently unavailable to Plus subscribers.
