Last year, Google launched more than 50 LLM improvements to improve security across its platforms. According to Alex Rodriguez, Google’s general manager of ad safety, while AI has shown great results in combating fraudulent accounts, the process still requires human intervention, Rodriguez told TechCrunch.
Google said a team of more than 100 experts, including members of the Ads Safety team and researchers from DeepMind, worked to improve security methods to combat digital fraud. They analyzed scams based on fake ads impersonating public figures and developed countermeasures.
The new methods have helped the company suspend more than 700,000 offending ad accounts, leading to a 90% reduction in reports of fake ads, Google says.
Google said that in the US alone, the company suspended 39.2 million advertiser accounts and removed 1.8 billion ads, with the main violations related to ad network abuse, trademark misuse, false health claims, personalized advertising and false messaging.
Overall, Google said it blocked 5.1 billion ads and removed 1.3 billion pages last year. By comparison, in 2023, the company blocked more than 5.5 billion ads and took action on 2.1 billion pages.
