“AI has the potential to destroy us all.” Former Google DeepMind researcher speaks out about the technology’s catastrophic risks
AI researcher Bilal Chughtai, who recently left Google DeepMind, has warned of a shortage of time to prevent widespread harm from AI, becoming the latest engineer to publicly express concerns about the technology.
AI researcher Bilal Chughtai, who recently left Google DeepMind, has warned of a shortage of time to prevent widespread harm from AI, becoming the latest engineer to publicly express concerns about the technology.
Bloomberg reports this with reference to Chugtay's social media. While working at Alphabet, he was responsible for security and harmonization of artificial intelligence models.
"At Google, I was a direct witness to the development of artificial intelligence. I am also extremely concerned about the direction in which this technology is developing. I sincerely believe that artificial intelligence has the potential to destroy us all," the scientist notes.
Despite the strong warnings, Chugtay remains optimistic about the possibility of safely controlling AI. He plans to devote his next phase of work to this direction. According to LinkedIn, the former DeepMind researcher has joined BlueDot Impact, a non-profit organization specializing in training specialists in AI security. Google representatives have so far refrained from commenting on the former employee’s statement.
Chugtay's statement added to a series of public statements against the uncontrolled arms race in the field of AI. Earlier, developer Jacob Coxon announced his resignation from Anthropic and OpenAI, accusing them of creating risks for humanity through the pursuit of superintelligence . At the same time, Anthropic's head Dario Amodei published an essay calling for a temporary slowdown in the development of the most powerful systems, which received support from OpenAI head Sam Altman and SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk.
Trump ignored the call of Amodei, Altman and Musk. In his opinion, the risk of losing the AI race to China is more real than the risks to human security from AI
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
