Meta’s Threads social network is testing a new feature that allows you to share long texts in a single post instead of creating entire chains of posts.
According to TechCrunch, the feature is a «text attachment» feature, first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu. It allows users to attach a block of extended text with basic formatting tools to a post. This allows users to post analytical materials, book excerpts, or their own notes without the limit of a few hundred characters.
Unlike the common practice of posting screenshots of phone «notes» or breaking up long thoughts into dozens of posts, the new format allows readers to see a preview in the feed and open the full text in a convenient window. One Threads user, Robert Nixon, has already demonstrated the feature in action: a gray block with a shortened excerpt is displayed in the post, which can be expanded and scrolled down.
The launch of the long text feature seems to be a response to «Articles» on X (formerly Twitter). There, the option is only available to premium subscribers and allows you to add not only text, but also photos and videos. Threads is currently only about text content, but since the tool is in the testing stage, Meta may expand its capabilities in the future.
The ability to publish longer content could be critical to retaining the audience of writers and journalists who are now flocking to Substack or Medium for a broader format. If Threads can combine the convenience of short posts with the potential for long reads, the platform will gain an additional competitive advantage against X.
Meta says it plans to gradually open access to the new feature to a wider range of users.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Threads surpassed the 400 million monthly user mark. In two years of existence, the platform has almost caught up with its main competitor X.
