TikTok blocked the account of the documentary about Elon Musk before its premiere: what is the reason?
On the eve of the wide release of Alex Gibney's documentary about Elon Musk, the social network TikTok completely blocked the film's official account on its platform.
On the eve of the wide release of Alex Gibney's documentary about Elon Musk, the social network TikTok completely blocked the film's official account on its platform.
The film's distributor, Bleecker Street, received a notification on Friday afternoon that the account had been "permanently and irrevocably suspended." TikTok declined to comment at the time, The Verge reports .
Despite the fact that TikTok is not officially associated with Elon Musk, the film features the social network's co-owner Larry Ellison - in particular, it highlights his text message in which he offered to help finance the purchase of Twitter (now X).
The account blocking was a continuation of a long-running conflict surrounding the film's promotion. Last month, platforms YouTube, Meta, X, and TikTok found themselves at the center of a scandal over their refusal to place commercials for the film.
YouTube and Google quickly reversed their decision, calling the rejection a “technical error.” TikTok and X, however, ignored the criticism and flatly refused to allow paid advertising for the documentary.
The complete blocking of the account is a significant escalation of the situation. The situation has acquired a special irony: shortly before the account was deleted, a promotional post appeared on the page urging viewers to watch the film “right now… before it’s closed.” A few hours after this publication, the profile ceased to exist.
