A batch of RTX 5090 graphics cards worth half a million dollars was stolen from an airport in Brazil
Brazilian electronics and IT equipment distributor Oderço reported the disappearance of a shipment of Zotac RTX 5090 graphics processors worth about $470,000 (2,500,000 reais). The company was expecting the arrival of two pallets of equipment at Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo, but the shipment went missing.
As Tom's Hardware reports , citing a post on the distributor's Instagram, Oderço is facing a similar incident for the first time in 38 years of operation. The company notes that they have not received any official responses to their inquiries from the airport or logistics services, which is why they were forced to publicize the case on social media. The distributor is not disclosing the exact date of arrival of the cargo and tracking numbers at this time.
It is estimated that at least 63 graphics cards were lost, although the actual number could be much higher, as the declared amount of 2,500,000 reais is the purchase price, not the retail price. In the Brazilian market, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 5090 model sells for approximately 34,000 reais, while its price on sites like Amazon reaches $8,000.
The disappearance of a large batch of high-performance chips occurred against the backdrop of a global shortage of flagship graphics processors. The RTX 5090 model has been practically absent from the assortment of the world's largest retailers since mid-September, and in large networks such as Micro Center the card is marked as out of stock. Rumors circulated on the Internet about the possible suspension of production of this Nvidia model in favor of more expensive accelerators for artificial intelligence, but the chipmaker itself denies these assumptions.
Earlier in the US, unknown persons stole two trailers belonging to the autonomous trucking company PlusAI, one of which had a bright NVIDIA logo . The thieves hoped to get hold of expensive GPU chips, but instead received 18 tons of sand.
