Bloomberg recalls that earlier, against the backdrop of a trade dispute with Canada, the decision to rename the lake was made by US President Donald Trump.
According to the company’s explanation, the change in the lake’s name on the maps was caused by a change in the US government’s official geographical naming system.
Earlier, New York Governor Katie Hochul had already stated that the state would not use the new name, which provoked a quarrel with Trump.
Meanwhile, Google Maps users in Canada will continue to see the body of water by its old name, Lake Ontario. The rest of the world will see both names.
«These updates are consistent with our long-standing policy regarding bodies of water with names that vary by country,» Alphabet said in a statement.
Other mapping services have not yet made changes to the lake’s name. Moreover, MapQuest has already stated that it will not change the lake’s name in its products. Apple Maps currently displays the body of water for users in the United States as Lake Ontario.
Last year, Trump already ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America.
Recall that almost 1 million people suffered financial losses totaling $3.8 billion after purchasing the $TRUMP memecoin, issued by US President Donald Trump.
