Starting today, civil servants in Sweden are banned from using ChatGPT and Claude in the workplace. The government made this decision due to potential threats to the country's information security.
This ban was introduced to ensure that civil servants only use government-approved AI tools — such as Microsoft Copilot.
According to Digitalization and IT Director Mikael Wettercrantz, using third-party AI services without government permission could have “serious consequences for Sweden’s information security.”
An internal audit conducted by the Swedish Transport Administration earlier this year found a number of “problematic” cases of artificial intelligence use. Among the auditors’ main concerns were:
use of unregulated AI services in workflows;
input of sensitive and confidential information by users into publicly available AI tools;
uncontrolled use and processing of data generated by responses.
Despite the general ban, some government employees will retain access to ChatGPT and Claude. However, their work will be carried out exclusively through a “special AI assistant platform” developed by the Swedish authorities for secure data monitoring.
According to Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Radio, similar restrictions on the use of ChatGPT and Claude have already been introduced by the Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care. The Swedish Enforcement Agency is currently considering a similar decision.
Previously, the Swedish government also restricted the use of the Chinese AI service DeepSeek in government structures.
