"Coordinates can jump to another country": CTO Uklon on service calls during alarms
According to Uklon CTO Oleksandr Chumak, in conditions of air alarms, the coordinates of devices are often incorrect: «We see that sometimes it is very difficult to find the place of the order — the coordinates can „jump“, sometimes even to another country. We put such cases on filtering and switch to address mode».
Uklon is partially testing alternative methods of determining location — including through mobile operator towers, but this is still in the research stage. In the meantime, the company gives users the option to manually specify the address where they are to get around the problem.
The transition from coordinates to addresses adds load to the system, but the company’s CTO assures: «We are constantly improving the solution, and in each new project we lay down the expected business efficiency. But it is difficult to say how much the address mode affects finances — we are still refining the metrics».
Uklon also records changes in the balance of supply and demand during threats.
«The number of orders can increase dramatically. But drivers are also people. Some are hiding in shelters, some are not working. Because of this, the waiting time increases», — explains Chumak.
The lack of accurate coordinates and the decrease in the number of active drivers during alarms are a double challenge for the platform. The company’s team continues to search for technical solutions and analytically study the impact of such factors on the quality of service.
