Uklon performs millions of route calculations every day to find the nearest driver, predict delivery times, and account for traffic jams.
This was announced by the company's CTO Oleksandr Chumak at the Uklon Media Day event, which dev.ua attended. Uklon abandoned Google Maps for route calculation — and saved millions. But all these calculations are expensive.
“If we used the Google Maps API, we would spend $8.5 million every year just on route processing. Our internal system costs many times less — about $42,000 per month (team costs — Ed.),” says the CTO.
This way, Uklon manages to save $708,000 per month. According to Chumak, the team working on the routes includes not only developers, but also cartographers who make changes to the maps, remove irrelevant objects, add new ones, and optimize road graphs. They promptly update the infrastructure, for example, when bridges are closed or the traffic pattern changes.
"Other services promised cheap routing. But when it came to a request for a million calculations, everything fell apart. If we really paid for each such calculation, as is the case with Google, our business would not be profitable," explains Chumak.
It was previously reported that after joining the Veon group, Uklon plans to select new markets where the parent company already has an operational base. This opens up opportunities for expansion in countries such as Kazakhstan and Pakistan, where working groups for market analysis and research have already been created. In Pakistan, Veon is represented by the mobile operator Jazz.
Uklon CEO Serhiy Grishkov said that the company's strategy for the next three years involves capturing 70% of the Ukrainian market . During this period, the company's value will increase to $300 million.
