Ukraine has agreed with Nokia and ICEYE to develop satellite capabilities for defense
Ukraine and Finland have signed a package of agreements worth a total of 300 million euros. Ukraine and Finland have signed a package of agreements worth a total of 300 million euros. Among the seven signed documents is a Letter of Intent between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Finnish space company ICEYE, and global telecommunications giant Nokia on cooperation in the field of satellite communications and space exploration.
The signing of the agreements was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a meeting with Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo.
"There is a new support package for Ukraine from Finland, and additionally, agreements that add opportunities for cooperation. Seven documents have been signed, the total volume of today's agreements is 300 million euros. We agreed that we will use more of Finland's satellite capabilities. This is important for our defense, for the stability of Ukraine. We agreed on this with Nokia and ICEYE," Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.
The partnership with ICEYE and Nokia aims to create a sovereign, secure and high-performance low-Earth orbit (LEO) broadband satellite communications system for Ukraine. Such a system will be based on European technologies and will give Ukraine full control over the satellites, ground infrastructure and terminals.
Satellite networks allow for maintaining and protecting communications in the event of damage or destruction of ground infrastructure, which is a critical factor for ensuring defense needs, protecting borders, and responding quickly to emergencies.
Earlier this month, ICEYE and Nokia announced a joint development of secure satellite communications systems for government and defense needs.
"Ukraine needs secure, sovereign, and high-performance satellite communications that it controls personally. We have a proven track record of rapidly deploying sovereign missions. ICEYE has been proud to support Ukraine since 2022, and we look forward to continuing this support in the future," said ICEYE CEO and Co-Founder Rafal Modrzewski.
Mikko Hautala, Head of Geopolitical Affairs and Head of Nokia Defense, emphasized that satellite communications will strengthen Ukraine's resilience and guarantee reliable access to critical communications in any conditions.
In addition to space technology, the Finnish aid package includes support for Ukraine's energy system and transport logistics, which remain major targets for Russian attacks. The agreements include the supply of additional locomotives, energy equipment and direct financial assistance to protect critical infrastructure.
