Ukraine will participate in EU programs to track space weather and dangerous objects that may threaten the Earth
Ukrainian and European representatives signed an agreement on Ukraine’s participation in the Copernicus component and the subcomponents «Space Weather Events» and «Near-Earth Objects» of the «Space Situational Awareness» component of the EU Space Program.
Ukrainian and European representatives signed an agreement on Ukraine’s participation in the Copernicus component and the subcomponents «Space Weather Events» and «Near-Earth Objects» of the «Space Situational Awareness» component of the EU Space Program.
The agreement was signed on the Ukrainian side by the Representative of Ukraine to the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community, Vsevolod Chentsov, and on the EU side by EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius. This is stated in a statement by the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine.
The cooperation involves Ukraine’s participation in:
the Copernicus component, which is responsible for Earth observation based on satellite and ground segments;
SWE subcomponent — the study of space weather and its impact on Earth;
NEO subcomponent — tracking cosmic bodies and objects that may pose a threat to Earth.
The agreement will contribute to the development of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in the field of space activities, expanding Ukraine’s competences in the areas of application of remote sensing of the Earth and observation of space objects.
This will provide opportunities for monitoring agriculture, civil protection, climate change, protection of power grids and communications, the environment, development of transport, security and defense, infrastructure, as well as building Ukraine’s potential in the space sector.
Recall that earlier Kateryna Chernogorenko announced the start of work of the Space Policy Department. According to her, it will create a legislative framework, be a center for technical expertise, and become a coordinator between all industry participants: engineers, innovators, developers, state institutions, and the scientific community.
The Ministry of Defense plans to launch its own defense satellites into orbit by 2030. What other goals are on the roadmap of the Space Policy Directorate?
