The system uses artificial intelligence to detect and track low-flying drones or cruise missiles in real time by analyzing their acoustic and electromagnetic traces, LRT reports , citing the country's Ministry of National Defense.
"Airborne threats are changing rapidly, so we are making appropriate decisions. Instead of creating everything from scratch, we are adapting systems that are already operating in Ukraine. In this way, we are consistently strengthening the entire air defense chain: from airspace surveillance to interception and neutralization of threats," said Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas.
According to the agreement signed this summer, the project involves not only the deployment of equipment, but also:
processing data collected by sensors;
use of libraries of digital acoustic and radio frequency threat “signatures”;
training of Lithuanian personnel.
During testing, experts will evaluate the effectiveness of the Ukrainian development for detecting and recognizing UAVs in the geographical conditions of Lithuania.
The move to strengthen air defenses became especially urgent after Italian fighter jets stationed in Šiauliai shot down a Russian drone that had flown into Lithuania from Belarus in September. This was the first time an enemy UAV had been shot down in the country's airspace since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
