Ukraine has millions of hours of drone footage that can be used to train artificial intelligence models to make decisions on the battlefield.
«OCHI» is a Ukrainian data collection system using reconnaissance and strike drones. Since 2022, the system, which analyzes video footage from more than 15,000 drone crews, has collected 2 million hours, or 228 years, of battlefield video, Oleksandr Dmytriev, the system’s founder and an adviser to the Defense Ministry, told Reuters.
These millions of hours of video footage will provide vital data for training AI.
«This is food for AI: if you want to train AI, give it 2 million hours (of video) and it will become something supernatural,» says Dmitriev.
According to him, the footage can be used to train AI models on combat tactics, target detection, and assess the effectiveness of weapons systems.
After the system was deployed in 2022, the team realized that the video sent by the drones could be useful as a record of the war — so they began storing it.
On average, according to Dmitriev, 5-6 terabytes of new data from combat sites were added every day.
Ukraine also has another system called Avengers, developed by the Ministry of Defense, that centralizes and collects video from drones and surveillance cameras. Using artificial intelligence identification tools, the system detects 12,000 pieces of Russian equipment every week.
