Ukrainian hackers have claimed responsibility for the high-profile hack of a Russian satellite provider that served the FSB and the enemy army. Previously, everyone believed that it was the Wagner Group that did it.
One of the co-founders of the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance, Andriy Baranovich (known as Sean Townsend), stated that his organization takes responsibility for the hacking of the Russian satellite operator Dozor-Teleport in 2023. Adding to the resonance of this case is the fact that this hacking was previously attributed to the Wagner group during its rebellion against the Russian authorities.
Sean Townsend spoke about this on the YouTube channel Hack Your Mom during an interview with Mykyta Knysh.
«At the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russians hacked Viasat, a European satellite operator that, among other things, worked for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And we hacked the satellite operator Dozor-Teleport, which served the FSB and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Northern Nuclear Fleet, and whoever else was there, over 3,000 ground stations,» shared Sean Townsend.
Then, as Sean Townsend said, they managed to disable not only the main station, but also the user terminals, and the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance deliberately «rewritten» this hack for the «Wagnerists».
«We formalized this breach, which was supposedly done by the 'Wagnerists'. It was right after the Prigozhin riot. We shot a video where a person in a uniform with Wagner chevrons takes responsibility,» he shared.
Sean Townsend added that the Russian operator took a long time to recover from this hack. «It took at least a week just for the provider itself to get the Internet back, and then they spent months restoring users' terminals,» the Ukrainian hacker said.
According to him, preparation for such an operation takes several weeks.
