Ukrainian schoolchildren won two gold and two silver medals at the 19th Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (JBOI 2026), which took place in Sarajevo on September 22–28. Thus, all four members of the Ukrainian team received medals.
This was reported by the Federation of Olympiad Programming.
The best result among Ukrainians was shown by eighth-grader Benedikt Kvasnytsia — he scored 500 points out of 600, won gold and took second place among all participants in the Olympiad.
Another gold medal went to Denys Ilyenkov from Kryvyi Rih Lyceum No. 129. And Maksym Bondarenko from the "Boyko Author's School" and Ilya Denisyuk from Khmelnytsky Lyceum No. 17 won silver medals.
The Olympiad is designed for participants up to 15.5 years old. Participants solved three algorithmic programming problems. For example, in the problem called Racecar, participants were asked to imagine a ring track on which cars start from different positions and move at different constant speeds. They had to write a program that would determine how many overtakings would occur in a given time.
In another problem called Treemax, participants were given a diagram of points connected together like a tree. Some of the points already had numbers, and for the rest they had to choose the right values so that the result for all possible paths between the points was as small as possible.
And in the problem called Sketch, you had to find the right number in a large table where the values were arranged in order. You couldn't just check all the cells. You had to come up with a way to find the answer with as few checks as possible.
Earlier, dev.ua wrote that Ukrainian schoolchildren won four medals at the 2026 Balkan Olympiad in Informatics in Tirana — one gold and three bronze. At that time, Ukraine performed as a guest team outside the official standings.
