Ukrainian SHERP all-terrain vehicles are being prepared for a demonstration in Greenland for military and rescue services. The demonstration will take place against the backdrop of a major rearmament of the Arctic, where tens of billions of kronor have already been directed.
This was reported by «Military». According to the publication, the equipment is planned to be presented to the Arctic Command and rescue services. The local SHERP dealer, Apollotech Systems, says bluntly that Greenland is a natural environment for such machines, because they were created specifically for difficult terrain, snow, ice, water and remote routes, where conventional transport quickly loses its effectiveness.
The tests are using machines from Arctic Capacity, a logistics company in Greenland and the wider Arctic region. This is not a one-day exhibition trip, but an attempt to show the equipment where it can be evaluated in practical scenarios. This is also important because interest in the Arctic is growing rapidly. Last year, 42 billion Danish kroner was allocated to rearmament in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, and in February this year, NATO created the Arctic Sentry mission to strengthen its presence in the region.
For a Ukrainian manufacturer, this is a chance to enter a niche where the key factors are not armor or firepower, but cross-country ability, autonomy and the ability to operate in an environment without normal road infrastructure. SHERP is manufactured by the company «QUADR INTERNATIONAL» at a factory in Kyiv. Although there are also assembly shops in Turkey and India, the main factory, design office and production of most components remain in Ukraine.
The machine itself is built according to an unusual logic. It is actually based on a boat, so the all-terrain vehicle can not only drive, but also swim at a speed of up to 6 km per hour. The capsule is sealed, and in case of an emergency, a water pumping system is provided. SHERP also has a side-turning scheme, when during the maneuver only the wheels on one side work, so the machine turns according to the principle of tracked vehicles. This gives it an advantage on difficult terrain, where conventional wheeled platforms often get stuck or lose control.
The story with Greenland is interesting because it is not just an export of civilian equipment. Against the backdrop of new interest in the Arctic, the Ukrainian manufacturer gets the opportunity to show its product in a region where equipment is chosen not based on advertising, but on its ability to actually work in the cold, water, swamps, and icy areas.
