Ukrenergo warns of phishing emails with “outage schedules” that contain malware
NPC Ukrenergo announced a fraudulent email campaign: recipients are offered to download supposedly «updated outage schedules,» but in fact the file contains malicious software.
NPC Ukrenergo announced a fraudulent email campaign: recipients are offered to download supposedly «updated outage schedules,» but in fact the file contains malicious software.
According to the Ukrenergo Telegram channel, attackers send emails with topics like «Power outage schedule from February 24 to 28» or «Updated schedule of restrictions.» The messages come from the address [email protected], which does not belong to the company. To build trust, the scammers add real Ukrenergo mailboxes to the recipient field — [email protected] or [email protected] .
The company explains that the «schedule» in the email is a decoy: once downloaded and launched, the file can steal passwords, banking details, and other personal information, give third parties access to the device, and use it for cyberattacks. Ukrenergo emphasizes that it never sends outage schedules in personal emails and does not distribute any software for download via mail.
If you receive such an email, Ukrenergo advises not to open the attachment, not to click on the links, and to delete the message immediately. If the file has already been accidentally downloaded, you should immediately check your device with an antivirus.
Ukrenergo publishes current notifications about power supply restrictions only on its official social media pages. And the schedules of power outages at a specific address should be checked on the pages of your distribution system operator, i.e. the relevant regional power utility in the region.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how taxpayers' email addresses are receiving letters purporting to be from the tax office, which contain phishing links and malicious programs to steal personal data. The State Tax Service of Ukraine explained how to avoid being caught by hackers.
