Ukrainian electronic warfare manufacturer Unwave has agreed to cooperate with Canadian defense company 49North, part of MDA Space Corporation. They plan to jointly produce systems to counter drones.
The companies signed a memorandum of cooperation within the framework of the Build with Ukraine program. This concerns the production of anti-drone systems, as well as their improvement and further maintenance.
The Ukrainian company has its own developments for detecting and countering drones, while the Canadian company specializes in complex defense systems, secure digital technologies, and maintenance of military equipment.
Among Unwave's developments is the "Vikha" electronic warfare system, which helps counter enemy drones. The company also created the "Steppe Wind" strike drone in collaboration with Sky Composite Engineering, and in collaboration with IXIAN, the Terrikon-X ground robotic complex.
Canada’s 49North also has experience with military drones. It is currently involved in a project to supply 11 CQ-9B Guardian drones to the Canadian Air Force by 2028. The company has brought in partners who will collect aerial imagery of ships to help create an automatic target recognition system.
And its parent company MDA Space previously supplied Heron drones to the Canadian military in Afghanistan and supported drone reconnaissance operations in Ukraine.
According to Unwave CEO Taras Bublyk, the main goal of the partnership is to strengthen the protection of the Ukrainian military, important facilities and critical infrastructure from drones, which are constantly changing. The Ukrainian company is also ready to share technologies that have already been tested in combat conditions to help Canadian partners improve their own means of protection.
The companies have not yet specified which anti-drone systems they will produce together, where they will locate the production, and when it may start operating.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that Unwave tested four of its EW systems — "VIKHA", "BOOMBOX", "SHATRO" and "CHOVEN-2" — as part of the Pentagon's Drone Dominance program in the US. They were tested in conditions close to a real battlefield.
