In Ukraine, fully autonomous Terminator drones destroyed Russians by choosing their own targets? What is known about the technology and why it was not scaled up
The New Scientist reported on the successful testing of fully autonomous drones in the war in Ukraine, which themselves chose a target within a given radius and destroyed the Russians.
The New Scientist reported on the successful testing of fully autonomous drones in the war in Ukraine, which themselves chose a target within a given radius and destroyed the Russians.
Citing the words of drone manufacturer Oleksandr Kokhanovsky, who is one of the co-owners of the Aero Center enterprise, the publication writes that the test was conducted two years ago.
The test allegedly involved 10 Terminator drones with artificial intelligence.
According to Kokhanovsky, the test involved quadcopters programmed to cover a distance of 3 to 5 kilometers in about 10 minutes, and then switch to «Terminator mode,» in which the artificial intelligence model searches for targets on its own.
«We just launch it, and we know that whatever is found there, in this particular area, will be dead,» the publication quotes Kokhanovsky as saying.
The latter claims that the result of the hit by autonomous drones was the elimination of several Russian soldiers and the destruction of an enemy truck.
The tests were allegedly conducted by the Ukrainian military near the cities of Bakhmut and Chasiv Yar.
At the same time, as the publication writes, citing sources in the defense industry, the Ukrainian government is currently allegedly prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence at the final stage of destroying targets among enemy manpower.
The publication also refers to reports from 2023, which allegedly stated that Ukrainian strike drones equipped with artificial intelligence found and attacked targets themselves without human assistance, but they were used against vehicles, not infantry.
Kochanovsky claims that the Terminator project has not progressed since the test due to existing limitations.
