As TechCrunch reports, the new service is available in beta on the telex.automattic.ai domain. Users can enter their desired query and then receive a ready-made .zip file with the block, which can be connected to a site as a plugin or uploaded to WordPress Playground — a version of the CMS that runs directly in the browser.
Telex works with the Gutenberg modular system used to build pages in WordPress: whether it’s text blocks, images, columns or other elements. In the presentation, WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg showed how developers were able to quickly create animations for a marketing campaign using Telex.
However, the tool is still far from perfect. Early testers noted that some projects are unstable or require additional refinement. Mullenweg himself emphasized that Telex is only a prototype, but expressed confidence in the potential of AI to advance WordPress' mission — to make web publishing accessible to everyone, without the need for complex technical knowledge.
In addition to Telex, another experimental AI tool was shown at WordCamp — a browser assistant to help WordPress users, which was built in less than a day. Mullenweg also shared his excitement about Perplexity Comet, a browser that allows you to interact with WordPress directly.
Telex’s launch comes amid competition in the field of AI agents and tools for automating website creation. Currently, Microsoft (Copilot) and Anthropic (Claude) are actively promoting their AI solutions for business. For WordPress, the launch of Telex could be a step towards strengthening its own ecosystem and at the same time a response to the challenges of new players in the market.
