How to write effective prompts for Midjourney: 9 recommendations from a Ukrainian web designer
Lyudmila Khalina, a web and UX/UI designer from Kharkiv, shared recommendations with examples on how to write prompts for Midjourney to get the maximum expected result.
Lyudmila Khalina, a web and UX/UI designer from Kharkiv, shared recommendations with examples on how to write prompts for Midjourney to get the maximum expected result.
“To get the most accurate and expected result in Midjourney, it is important to compose prompts (queries) in a way that contains enough information and understandable patterns,” Lyudmila noted in her LinkedIn post. Here are her recommendations for writing effective prompts.
1. Be specific
The designer recommends specifying what you want as much as possible: the more details in the request, the more accurate the result.
For example:
Unintelligible: "landscape painting."
Specifically: "a landscape with snow-covered mountain peaks against a sunset backdrop, in a realist style."
2. Use visual styles
The second recommendation is to indicate what artistic style or technique the image should be made in. This will help the model understand what visual style is required.
For example:
Examples of styles: "realism", "cyberpunk", "graffiti", "watercolor", "retro-futurism", "surrealism".
You can specify specific artists or famous styles: "in the style of artist John Williams", "like the works of Hayao Miyazaki".
3. Specify a color palette
If you want the image to have certain colors, be sure to specify this.
For example:
"A warm palette with gold and red hues."
"Black and white painting with accents of blue."
4. Pay attention to the composition
Refine your composition when you need individual elements to be positioned in a certain way in the image.
For example:
"Main object in the center, with a cityscape background."
"The upper left corner is a starry sky, below is an abandoned castle."
5. Use clear labels
MidJourney supports the use of keywords or tags to simplify the query.
For example:
Light: "soft light", "bright light", "backlight".
Emotions: "melancholy", "joy", "fear".
Theme: "mysticism", "fantasy", "adventure".
6. Use dimensions and proportions
Specify if size or aspect ratio is important.
For example:
"Horizontal composition."
"16:9 aspect ratio."
7. Specify the level of detail
You can specify the level of complexity depending on how much detail is required.
For example:
"With high detail."
"Minimalist style."
8. Avoid ambiguity
The designer advises making sure that the query does not have duplicate values. This will help avoid errors.
For example:
Unintelligible: "car on the street."
It's clear: "a modern sports car on a city street at night."
9. Using commands
Some Midjourney commands can help improve results:
--v 5 — to use the latest version of the model;
--ar 16:9 — to change the image proportions";
--q 2 — to improve image quality;
--stylize 250 — to increase stylization.
And as a conclusion, Lyudmila Khalina wrote: "Thoroughly working out the prompt and including details such as style, color palette, composition, and mood significantly increases the likelihood of getting the desired image. Experiment with different approaches and commands to understand which wording works best for your purposes."
