The National Police extradited from Norway a Ukrainian banker suspected of stealing over UAH 1 million from client accounts through access to the bank’s internal system.
As the press service of the Cyber Police reported, the head of one of the branches of a Ukrainian bank in the Ternopil region entered into the trust of clients and gained access to their bank cards. After that, he issued online loans in their names and withdrew cash from their accounts.
In addition, the attacker used official access to the internal banking system, being able to access citizens' deposit accounts and open credit cards in the names of clients under the pretext of checking the balance of funds or processing social payments.
"The man chose mostly representatives of socially vulnerable categories of the population as his victims. Later, the man withdrew funds from credit and deposit accounts at ATMs and cash desks of his own branch without the permission of the owners," the Cyberpolice reported.
His actions caused losses of over UAH 1.1 million to 15 victims.
The suspect was hiding abroad, so he was put on an international wanted list and arrested in Norway with the assistance of Interpol. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
As dev.ua reported, the Cyber Police and investigators of the National Police reported suspicions to the organizer of the Money 24/7 network, which, according to the investigation, was taking possession of clients' money under the guise of legal currency and crypto-asset exchange. One of the victims suffered losses of almost UAH 1.6 million.
