Ukrainian man gets flagship 9800X3D instead of Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor, sparking ethical debate on Reddit
A heated discussion broke out on Reddit around the order of a Ukrainian user who, instead of a Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor worth UAH 14,400, received a newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which costs UAH 19,500. A mistake by the store or logistics staff resulted in a free upgrade for the buyer worth about $125, but an attempt to keep the product divided the Internet community.
This incident was first reported by Videocardz, citing a discussion on Reddit.
A user with the nickname jackinets said that he decided to upgrade his processor after an unsuccessful cooler replacement, which resulted in damaged contacts on the motherboard. Due to a limited budget, he hesitated between two models, but in the end he chose the older Ryzen 7 7800X3D for 14,400 UAH ($350). However, the courier delivered him an OEM version of the processor in a tray, which turned out to be much more expensive Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
«The PC gods definitely compensated me for all this stress. I’m putting this RTX 5070 Ti beast together tonight!» the buyer shared his joy, later confirming that the processor had passed the tests and was completely original.
The situation took a different turn when another user of the platform under the nickname R0bben68 noticed the name of a Ukrainian store on the published photo and informed its managers about the error. The company representatives thanked them for their vigilance and noted that if a shortage was detected, the guilty courier would face a fine of 5,000 UAH. After that, the author of the original post deleted his post in the Ukrainian subreddit due to a wave of critical comments. However, he left a post in the English-language community r/pcmasterrace, where his post gained over 19,000 likes.

A verbal spat broke out between users regarding the ethics of the act. R0bben68 accused the buyer of misappropriation of someone else’s property, emphasizing that an ordinary person could have suffered because of his silence.
In response, jackinets stated that he was not going to hide and planned to resolve the situation with the retailer himself. According to him, he offered the store partial compensation, taking into account the week-long delay in delivery and the loss of the official warranty due to the mismatch of the model in the receipt. However, a compromise could not be reached.
«The store did not agree to such conditions, demanding a full surcharge. Well, I left the situation as it is. My conscience is clear,» the buyer concluded, adding that he considers the accusation of theft a manifestation of the «Soviet mentality.»
