Pentagon database hack exposes confidential information of 3 million US military personnel — even deceased ones. What happened
An unauthorized breach of the Pentagon’s personnel database has exposed confidential information on about 3 million US military personnel, including details of their positions and social security numbers.
An unauthorized breach of the Pentagon’s personnel database has exposed confidential information on about 3 million US military personnel, including details of their positions and social security numbers.
According to a US Department of Defense spokesman, this affected 2.76 million living military personnel and another 294,000 deceased.
According to ABC News, the volume and sensitivity of the disclosed information could raise national security concerns, as the files contained details of the work of military and civilian Pentagon employees.
“The Defense Department’s Military Data Center (DMDC) information system experienced unauthorized access to personal data of a small number of unauthorized users between October 2025 and July 2026. Upon discovery, DMDC immediately remediated the vulnerability,” a Pentagon official said.
US Department of Defense officials said they had not yet found any evidence that the disclosed information was used improperly.
The news of the Pentagon database breach came after the FBI sent a message to its employees on Friday outlining its response to a security breach on the FBIJobs.gov job portal.
As sources told ABC News, the attackers said they would publish the data of FBI employees, including home addresses, personal and work contact information, social security numbers, and more.
However, the shinyhunters hacker group, which claimed responsibility for the incident, later stated that it would not release the data, as it had previously stated.
