He told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the DevDay conference, Business Insider reports. Ive criticized smartphones and tablets and expressed hope that new artificial intelligence devices will make people happier and less anxious.
«We have a chance not just to fix this, but to completely change the situation we find ourselves in. We cannot accept that this should be the norm,» said the famous designer
OpenAI acquired Iva’s startup earlier this year for more than $6 billion. Its engineers set out to design, engineer, and manufacture a collection of products for the era of artificial general intelligence—the moment when technology achieves human-like cognitive abilities.
Now the team is continuing this work at OpenAI, and the combination of the company’s capabilities and Ive’s design skills poses a potential threat to Apple, which dominated the mobile era but lags behind in the field of generative artificial intelligence.
Ive said that progress is so fast now that it’s hard for him and his design team to focus.
«That momentum led us to create 15 to 20 really interesting product ideas. The challenge is to stay focused. It would be easy if you knew there were three good ideas. But that’s not the case. We’re building a family of products. And we try to be judicious and deliberate about what we focus on so that we don’t get distracted later,» Ive said.
Ive expressed hope that the devices will be interesting and solve some of the problems that smartphones and tablets have created over the past ten to twenty years.
Earlier, media reports appeared that the collaboration between Ive and OpenAI was facing «technical difficulties» that could ultimately push back the device’s release date, scheduled for 2026.
