"While you're show off, someone who's ready to work 24/7 will take your dream job." How to get into IT when you're 40 and times are tough: tips from a developer

Full-Stack Developer from Kharkiv region Iryna Kostromytska published a post about how to get into IT when you’re already 40 and times are tough. The woman was able to learn English in a year and get a job at a top IT company because she had a lot of motivation — her family was left homeless due to the war. Her advice is being hotly discussed by the community.

«I’ve already written about this in the comments several times and received a barrage of hate. I will write the rules on my page, which should be in front of your eyes 24/7,» the developer noted and outlined four key points.

  1. Forget about work-life balance and «personal boundaries.» «While you’re to show off, someone who’s ready to work 24/7 will take your dream job,» argues Iryna.
  2. Fluent spoken English. Not based on the results of any tests from the Internet. «Nobody needs this. You just have to speak! English lessons every day are a must have,» the specialist notes.
  3. Write projects, each of which is not 100,500 layouts, but one on React + Express + Mongo, the second on Angular + Nest + Postgres. «Your projects should show your versatility and quick learning, not your knowledge of HTML+CSS,» the developer convinces.
  4. Don’t listen to other people’s whining and don’t complain yourself. «Just work. Every day. Keep pounding this rock,» she added.
  5. Be sure to tell about everything you do! «Allow yourself to brag! Sometimes it’s very difficult, but it’s really necessary to sell yourself,» Iryna noted.

The developer’s post is being actively discussed by the community. Some IT professionals agree with her, while others call her advice unrealistic.

«Everything is fine, except for the first one, I’m not ready to (fuck off), as you wrote, so that I can remember everything and tell my grandchildren how I (fucked off) my whole life. Or hate what I do, you won’t earn all the money, and horses will die from such work,» notes UX/UI Designer Daria Rabenko.

Full-stack Developer Kostya Kazmiruk believes that it is difficult to understand both the BackEnd and FrontEnd of Juniper. «I speak from my own experience, and to write on different frameworks, I would shoot myself, to be honest. This is how you can get into tutorial hell,» he adds.

«Since when did 24/7 hard work with no personal boundaries become a 'dream job'? Such work will quickly drain even the strongest person. Spend your vital energy rationally: it is not renewed,» says Middle Frontend Developer Arsen Kazydub.

Victoria Bordyug, Senior Software Engineer, believes that if the dream job is taken by someone who works hard 24/7, the vacancy will open up again very quickly. «Although I generally agree with the idea. And the irony is that even with such a personal attitude to work, you need to be a little lucky,» she added.

According to Bohdan Solomich, Full Stack Developer, Irina’s advice is good for those who already know Javascript and PHP with the corresponding framework for it. «And if you only know Javascript with all the corresponding baggage for it, then what? Just learning PHP at once, I’ll tell you, is not a path to take. Of course, those who have been working in this field for 5-10 years already know PHP, JS, Python, and maybe Java, but those who have only been doing it for the first few years?» says the developer. He adds: «Nobody works hard 24/7, you’ve already gone too far, because you also need to rest. I agree that English is necessary, as well as perseverance and a lot of work to achieve the goal, but not every day without days off, otherwise burnout and psychological irritation will begin. It’s the same as going to work without days off. There should be a limit to everything, otherwise you can go crazy.»
