Kyivstar does not expect a large-scale 5G launch in Ukraine until the end of the war. Here’s why
Large-scale deployment of 5G in Ukraine will be difficult until the end of the war due to the need to check the electromagnetic compatibility of the network with military systems. Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov said this in an interview with LIGA.net.
According to him, during martial law, it is impossible to conduct such testing immediately throughout the country.
To illustrate, Komarov cited a 5G pilot project in Lviv: the electromagnetic compatibility test there lasted about three months, although it only involved a small part of the city.
There is another reason not to rush into 5G: Kyivstar is still continuing to build out its LTE network, especially outside of large cities.
According to Komarov, the development of 4G is an important prerequisite for 5G: in approximately 95% of cases, the new network will be based on the existing LTE infrastructure.
Currently, Kyivstar’s LTE network covers about 97% of Ukraine’s population. In 2025, the operator expanded LTE coverage to 630 more settlements.
