As dev.ua was told by the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the pilot project to launch 5G in Borodyanka and Kharkiv, where many foreigners come, will take place at frequencies in the 3400–3800 MHz range.
«We are in dialogue with operators to make sure that they are all ready for 5G testing, in particular in terms of equipment modernization. We hope that they will all be able to test 5G at the same time,» the department’s response to a request from dev.ua says.
The number of base stations planned to be deployed is not yet known. » These are still plans, because the changes have just been adopted, so the implementation of the pilot has not begun,» the Ministry of Digital Affairs explains.
5G will cover certain areas in the specified cities. «Each operator independently chooses the locations, but the main coverage areas have already been approved. For security reasons, exact data will be announced closer to the launch,» the Ministry of Digital Affairs notes.
The ministry assured that they are working to make the pilot available to all subscribers whose phones can support 5G. «As of today, not all models have this option. The Ministry of Digital Affairs has already held negotiations with Apple and Samsung — as a result, this fall the brands will update their software with 5G support in Ukraine,» the response to the request reads.
The timing of the technology launch in Borodyanka depends on the timing of the first launch in Lviv, which is expected in the fall of 2025.
As dev.ua reported, after testing in Lviv this fall, 5G mobile communication technology will be tested in Kharkiv and Borodyanka. Previously, in the second stage, it was planned to be tested only in Kyiv and Odessa.
It was previously reported that the final shutdown of 3G in Ukraine and the transition to 5G is scheduled for December 31, 2030 .
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov believes that the inclusion of cities such as Kharkiv and Borodyanka in the 5G testing will also be a symbolic step and will show that Ukraine is technologically developing, despite a full-scale war. He called the launch of the technology in Kharkiv «a feat for Putin.»
