A third of Ukrainians have encountered attempts to hack their accounts, and about 40% ignore personal data protection: Rakuten Viber study

Almost a third of Ukrainians have had their accounts hacked or stolen, and 13% of them have experienced the unpleasant consequences of such incidents. At the same time, 38% of users do not use any methods to protect their personal data at all.

This is evidenced by the results of a recent survey conducted by Rakuten Viber.

According to the company, 29% of respondents have personally experienced attempted cyberattacks on their accounts. More than 52% have heard of similar cases from their acquaintances. Only 19% of survey participants said that neither they nor their environment have encountered the problem of account theft or hacking.

Among those who use cyber protection methods, the most popular tool remains two-factor authentication, which is installed everywhere by 15% of Ukrainians. Another 13% use antivirus on their smartphone, and the same share of users download applications exclusively from official sites. Other methods are less common: 7% use different passwords for all services, 6% try not to share their phone number anywhere, and only 1% change passwords often.

The largest group (38%) remains users who neglect digital security, relying on the fact that "everything will be fine anyway."

Rakuten Viber notes that compared to a similar survey conducted in January 2024, Ukrainians' approaches to data protection have undergone minor changes. The share of those who ignore security has decreased from 43% to 38%, while the popularity of two-factor authentication and downloading applications from official sources has increased slightly.
