Either the US or China. America is preparing an ultimatum to a number of countries — they must choose the “right” side in the AI confrontation

The US is preparing to tell dozens of countries that they must choose sides in the artificial intelligence race with China.

According to Reuters, the US intends to warn other countries that if they make the «wrong» decision, they will be excluded from the US-led AI coalition called Pax Silica.

The coalition was launched last year to supply artificial intelligence models, semiconductors, and critical technology minerals. About two dozen countries have joined it, including Kazakhstan, which has also joined a similar coalition with China.

A draft letter on this topic, prepared by the US State Department, is to be addressed to the 35 signatories of the American statement on the capabilities of AI.

The publication writes that by pressuring other countries in this way, the US hopes to deprive China of resources in the race to create perfect artificial intelligence that could be used for military or economic dominance.

Recall that in July, Chinese leader Xi Jinping created the «World Organization for Artificial Intelligence Cooperation,» a rival to the United States. Kazakhstan is the only country known to have joined both initiatives, which has caused concern in Washington.

«Being part of everything means being part of nothing. Signing the Pax Silica declaration is not just a membership fee, but a commitment. You cannot be a member of duplicative initiatives whose expectations contradict our own,» says the letter, which is going to be sent to other countries.

Reuters was unable to determine when the US intended to send the letter or whether it could be amended before then. The US State Department told Reuters it would not comment on «leaked internal documents.»

The Chinese embassy in Washington, for its part, said the country opposes the politicization of trade and technology issues. «Such actions will only stifle global progress in the field of artificial intelligence and serve no one’s interests,» an embassy spokesman said.

Meanwhile, as dev.ua wrote, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg believes that the United States should not block advanced Chinese artificial intelligence models in order to win the technological race.
