A Ukrainian indie developer named Yolander is developing a turn-based strategy game called Agelong, inspired by the Civilization series. The main feature of his project is the combination of classic strategy mechanics with detailed city-building without grid binding.
The developer spoke about the project on Reddit. Agelong covers the development of human civilization from the primitive camp around the hearth to the industrial age, the atomic age, and space travel.
Unlike classic representatives of the genre, the game offers free settlement development: players can lay roads of any configuration, build houses, bridges and canals. Construction affects the economy — each scientific discovery provides practical opportunities instead of standard percentage bonuses.
Agelong features a dynamic seasonal change, requiring the preparation of food and firewood supplies for the winter, as well as turn-based battles on small hexes against barbarians or other players.
"I want cities to be different depending on the terrain and how you plan them. One will stretch along the river, another will grow in blocks around the square," says developer Yolander.
Currently, the first era is available for the project, which includes base construction, a technology tree, a combat system, and online multiplayer for 1–4 players. There is no public build of Agelong yet, and the author is currently continuing work on AI bots and subsequent eras.
