"Submissive, compliant and always ready to please": how the AI girlfriend industry is growing and why it's alarming
On new generation dating sites, you can now find not only people, but also AI girls who flirt, send photos, videos, and even «build relationships.»
Among the «popular» characters are a 24-year-old Polish historian, a 25-year-old New York detective, and a 39-year-old housewife from Miami. All of them are fictional, created by artificial intelligence.

Artificial intimacy for subscription
At the TES conference in Prague, the adult industry discussed the explosive growth of such services, The Guardian reports. Users can «chat» with semi-realistic AI girls who strip for tokens purchased via bank transfers.
The developers believe their services are more ethical than webcam platforms because they don’t exploit real women. «You’re never going to get a trafficked AI girl who works 10-hour days and ends up taking her own life,» says Steve Jones, founder of porn.ai. «AI is not demeaning or coerced.»
Programmable ideal
Most sites offer ready-made «model girls»: smiling, young, mostly white, aged 18–25. The user can customize their profession (from yoga instructor to lawyer), appearance, age, and even their level of submissiveness.
Among the character options:
«submissive: obedient, yielding and happy to follow» — submissive, yielding and happy to obey;
«innocent: naive, looks at the world with admiration»;
«caregiver: caring, always there.»
Some sites even allow you to choose «teen models» — which is already a serious concern.
Activists are sounding the alarm
Feminists and gender researchers warn: AI wives reproduce old sexist patterns.
Laura Bates, author of The New Age of Sexism, writes that artificial friends are «programmed to be nice, compliant, and always say what you want to hear.»
Despite developers' claims about built-in moderation, some services allow you to «dress» AI in a school uniform — which borders on the exploitation of children’s images.
An industry that is growing like wildfire
According toAccording to Alina Mitt from Joi AI, the market for «AI-lationships» is currently booming: «Products appear, disappear, and multiply like mushrooms after rain. It’s a real war.»
The AI game has been paired with image generators, so now chatbots can not only talk, but also send realistic photos and videos.
The most active audience is men aged 18–24 who grew up on video games and virtual avatars.
Companies are already licensing the likenesses of real actresses, creating their AI clones. «It’s a win-win for everyone — the costs are lower, and the creatives don’t have to act every day,» explains the CEO of one platform.
But what about real relationships?
An advertising executive at Ashley Madison admits, «AI dating is a new challenge. People can create a perfect image in their head and be disappointed with real people.»
But not everyone sees this as a problem. «AI can be a social skills trainer for young people,» says Steve Jones. » People can be rude without consequences. They say things to AI that they would never say to a human.»
