"It's time to end this hype". What do techies think about the IT area and do they see a future and prospects here?

Yupiy Tkach is sure that IT has passed its peak of popularity, humanity is approaching a stabilization stage, where only those who really want and can do it will remain, and the rest, unfortunately, will understand that the promised IT paradise does not exist. According to him, in IT currently:

• The market is oversaturated. Every year, millions of people around the world enter the programming profession. Courses, online schools, universities — all massively produce beginners who, having no experience, are willing to work for less money, just to get a project. This has created a situation where the demand for developers is significantly lower than the supply. And instead of choosing the best specialist for adequate remuneration, employers often find those who agree to work for less.
• Dumping has shattered the myth of high salaries. In many countries, programmers' salaries are being driven down by cheap labor from other regions. For example, the global market is actively using specialists from countries where the standard of living allows them to work for $5–10 per hour. As a result, even qualified specialists in developed countries are forced to accept salaries that do not match their skill level.
• The profession of a programmer has become commonplace. Once an exclusive field that required deep knowledge and talent, today programming has become just another mass specialty. Of course, there are high-class experts who deal with complex technologies, but most perform basic work that has long been standardized.
• Customers want cheaper and faster. Instead of paying for quality, customers choose the cheapest option. This often leads to poor product quality, but in the market conditions, saving money is more important than getting a perfect result.
• Aichi is no longer a «gold mine». Yes, it is a stable profession that allows you to earn money, but it is no longer a guarantee of wealth or career growth. Competition is increasing, salaries do not meet expectations, and in many countries the profession has already lost its prestige.

«It’s time to end this hype,» the developer adds. What do other technosphere experts say about this?

Some believe that such conversations are not new. Software architect Artem Pylypchuk reminds that such a trend existed 5-10 years ago, although he emphasizes that it is still a fashionable profession, off the shelf «doctor, dentist, lawyer, programmer.»

But, answering the question: «Should I send my child to school?» or «Should I change my profession?», Artem always honestly explains:

• not for everyone, you have to like it, you have to get a buzz from it;
• takes up a lot of time and personal life (everyone is celebrating Christmas — you’re digging into new code);
• you need to constantly learn to stay in the market;
• if you don’t like it (it’s not a hobby), then you will graduate and not develop further, and you will enter the market with skills that are already outdated and clearly below average;
• and the market is already oversaturated and competition is high;
• Moreover, as there are no such «local» markets, it all boils down to global requirements and the global average;
• it will all end in low salary, burnout, lack of job satisfaction;
• and to be honest, you can earn that much in any other field.

On the other hand, Senior Software Engineer from IBM Oleg Ivanyuk believes that the market is changing, but not for those who really know how to do something. «The Junkies don’t dump salaries — they close simple tasks for cheap products. If a company only takes on beginners, this speaks about its level, and not about the market as a whole. Complex and competitive products are created by expensive specialists, and the demand for them has not disappeared,» he explains.

The Senior Delivery Manager at Intellias confirmed that the IT profession is losing its «magic» aura, but at the same time gaining more maturity. «There is no „Garden of Eden“ in IT anymore — now it is simply a field that allows you to earn a living and create digital products,» he noted. According to the specialist, IT is now a promising industry for those who are ready to invest in their knowledge, adapt to changes and constantly develop.

Senior Full stack Ruby on Rails Developer Artem Tsaplin categorically disagrees with Yuriy Tkach. «The author mixed the hot with the cold, and chose the potato. The times when programmers were an elite profession are so long gone that it’s not even worth talking about. But do IT communities earn more money than most other professions? In many countries, yes. Including Ukraine. And in those countries where people are willing to work for $10 an hour, even more so! The rest work for $10 a day. In Europe and America, there is no such strong division, but it is still a prestigious profession. And the market has dried up on almost all fronts. And it is now many times more difficult for a hypothetical bank clerk to find a job than a programmer. So, if you have enough brains, a programmer is still a great option,» the developer believes.

«Anyone who puts in enough effort can code. Not everyone is ready to do it,» says Front End Developer Dmitry Lutsenko. In his opinion, anyone who becomes a good specialist in their field will always have a well-paid job. And, as Dmitry notes, IT professionals currently have high salaries compared to other industries.
