Alibaba Group first mentioned the plan last week when the company reported its results, but did not provide a specific figure. Now it has been revealed that the amount is $52.41 billion, the WSJ reports.
Alibaba Group, co-founded by Jack Ma, reported better-than-expected results in the three months ended December, with revenue growth accelerating to its fastest pace since late 2023, helped by improvements in its e-commerce and cloud businesses.
China’s biggest tech companies, from Alibaba to Baidu, are ramping up efforts to boost AI business growth as the success of Chinese startup DeepSeek has captured the world’s attention. Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai said earlier this month that his AI technology would be integrated into Apple’s iPhone for the Chinese market, a move analysts say will boost the brand’s image and drive long-term growth.
Last month, Alibaba unveiled Qwen2.5 Max, the latest version of its artificial intelligence model, which it says competes with world leaders including DeepSeek-V3.
Alibaba’s AI unit Qwen, which is DeepSeek’s main domestic competitor, has also released a new family of AI models, Qwen2.5-VL. These models can analyze files, understand videos, count objects in images, and control a computer — similar to OpenAI’s Operator AI agent.
Recall that China has created a new underwater state-of-the-art intelligent computing center in the city of Lingshui, Hainan Province, which consists of a capsule with more than 400 high-performance servers on the seabed.
