The new Qwen3.8-Max is built on 2.4 trillion parameters and ranks higher in several benchmarks than Moonshot's recently introduced Kimi K3 , which caused a lot of publicity, writes Bloomberg.
Alibaba shared results showing that its model performs comparable to, and sometimes better than, Anthropic's Fable 5, an advanced AI model that the US temporarily imposed export restrictions on due to its advanced capabilities.

The company will release the Qwen3.8-Max scale for free download next week, allowing users to customize the technology to their own needs. Alibaba’s Qwen offering is also aggressively priced at $2 per million inbound tokens and $6 per million outbound. While each AI system spends a different number of tokens to complete tasks, this still makes Alibaba’s model attractive compared to the best solutions from American leaders.

According to Alibaba, the new Qwen3.8-Max excels at autonomous coding and long-term task execution: during internal testing, it was able to independently implement an engineering software project within 16 days. The new system has also become more efficient — it activates only certain parts of itself during operation, which reduces computational costs and response latency.
