Alphabet to sell $80 billion in shares to fund AI: one of the largest capital raisings in history

'Google's parent company, Alphabet, has announced plans to raise up to $80 billion through a share offering to finance its massive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, raising new questions about the economic feasibility of the AI boom.
This move, which has become one of the largest capital raisings in the history of the global market, involves an initial collection of $30 billion, the sale of shares worth $10 billion to the American investment group Berkshire Hathaway (which until last year was headed by legendary investor Warren Buffett for 60 years), as well as the launch of a flexible gradual financing mechanism worth $40 billion, the funds from which will be raised over time and are not specifically earmarked for investments in AI, The Guardian reports .
Alphabet — the company behind Gemini, which is aggressively increasing its share of the AI chatbot market — said it would use the money to expand its “world-class AI computing infrastructure to meet unprecedented customer demand.”
The company said: “AI provides a stage for rapid expansion for Alphabet. It is seeing strong demand for its AI solutions and services from both enterprises and consumers — at levels that exceed the company’s existing offering.
By scaling its investments, the company aims to expand its core infrastructure to support the significant growth opportunities that lie ahead.
However, such a large-scale fundraising is also a warning to the markets: despite the multi-billion dollars pouring into AI infrastructure, the real returns for investors still remain limited.
Jim Reid, a market strategist at Deutsche Bank, said Alphabet was reminding investors of the “unprecedented scale of the AI spending boom,” adding: “Financing this AI boom is becoming an increasingly important topic for markets.”
Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said Alphabet's capital raising is "a clear sign that the AI arms race is moving into a more capital-intensive phase."
“This is certainly a huge amount of money to raise, but the devil is in the details. All of that $80 billion is less than 2% of Alphabet’s gargantuan $4.6 trillion market cap… However, no matter how it’s structured, one thing is crystal clear. Long gone are the days when tech giants were ‘capital-light’ free cash flow generating machines.”
He added: “Alphabet is certainly spending from a position of strength, not hardship. Demand for AI computing power is outpacing supply, Google Cloud growth has accelerated dramatically, backlogs are up, and Search is proving to be much more resilient than many feared. This gives the investment case a stronger case than some other AI spending stories, where the path to payback is much harder to see.”
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
