OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has opined that jobs that could soon be transformed or eliminated by artificial intelligence are not «real jobs.»
He stated this at the OpenAI DevDay conference in a conversation with journalist Rowan Cheung.
«If you had told a farmer fifty years ago that this magical thing called the Internet would create a billion new jobs, he probably wouldn’t have believed you,» the journalist said.
However, he noted that in the age of AI, these «billion jobs for knowledge workers» will be at risk before new ones are created.
«The thing is, not only will farmers not believe you, but it’s very likely that they’ll look at what you’re doing and what I’m doing and say, ‘This isn’t real work,’» Altman replied.
According to him, when a worker is engaged in agriculture, he is doing what people really need.
«You’re producing food for them, you’re sustaining their lives. That’s real work.» But a farmer would view our current jobs as «a game to fill your time,» and therefore not «real work.» It’s possible that if we could see these jobs of the future, Altman said, «we’d think, ‘Maybe our job isn’t as real as a farmer’s job, but it’s a lot more real than this game you’re playing for fun,’» the OpenAI CEO explained.
He added that even with the development of AI, people will find «a lot of things to do.»
Sam Altman previously warned that artificial intelligence could destroy entire categories of jobs. He said it could replace support workers because it «doesn’t make mistakes.»
