American feminists are demanding that Google and Apple remove the X app from their stores, and in California, prosecutors have already taken up Grok. What's happening?
A large coalition of women’s rights groups, civil society organizations, and activists is calling on Google and Apple to remove the social networking app X and its associated chatbot Grok from their app stores.
A large coalition of women’s rights groups, civil society organizations, and activists is calling on Google and Apple to remove the social networking app X and its associated chatbot Grok from their app stores.
According to Reuters, in letters to the tech giants, the coalition accused Elon Musk’s apps of creating illegal content that violates both companies' terms of service.
The initiative, which includes feminist group UltraViolet, the National Organization for Women, liberal group MoveOn and parental advocacy group ParentsTogether Action, aims to increase pressure on Musk after Grok began generating sexually explicit, degrading or violent images of women and children.
«We urge Apple and Google to take this extremely seriously. They are enabling a system in which thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people, especially women and children, are sexually abused through their app stores,» said UltraViolet campaign director Jenna Sherman.
Recall that Malaysia and Indonesia have already banned Grok due to explicit AI content, while authorities in Europe and the UK have announced investigations into the matter.
Some major organizations and opinion leaders are already abandoning X: for example, on Tuesday the American Federation of Teachers announced its withdrawal from the social network due to indecent images of children created by Grok.
Although X has configured the chatbot so that images generated or edited by Grok are not posted to the public feed, testing of Grok by Reuters on Tuesday found that it still generates versions of photos of people in their underwear.
At the same time, as Bloomberg writes, xAI faced an investigation by the California Attorney General over sexual images on Grok.
Elon Musk’s startup is under investigation after its chatbot Grok was used to create sexualized images of women and children without their consent. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the investigation, saying Grok’s role in creating sexualized images was «shocking» and calling on xAI to take immediate action.
«I urge xAI to take immediate action to ensure this does not continue. We have zero tolerance for the creation and distribution of intimate images or child sexual abuse material using artificial intelligence,» Bonta said in a statement.
California Governor Gavin Newsom called on the attorney general to «immediately investigate the company’s activities and hold xAI accountable.»
As dev.ua previously reported, after a high-profile scandal, Elon Musk’s company xAI urgently restricted access to the image generation function in the Grok chatbot. From now on, only paid subscribers are allowed to create images.
