American code editor Cursor has created its new AI programming model based on China's Kimi. What was the company's response to this unexpected discovery?
Recently, the web-coding platform Cursor introduced a new programming model, Composer 2, claiming that it is «advanced coding intelligence.» However, doubts have arisen on the X network about the development: user Fynn claims that it is just a modified version of the Chinese model Kimi 2.5 from Moonshot AI, which is supported by Alibaba and HongShan.
As evidence, Fynn pointed to code in which the model apparently identified herself as Kimi. «They would have at least changed the model ID,» he noted.
was messing with the OpenAI base URL in Cursor and caught this
The news came as a surprise given Cursor’s status as a successful American startup. Last fall, the company closed a $2.3 billion investment round, valuing it at $29.3 billion, and its projected annual revenue now stands at over $2 billion. It’s worth noting that Cursor made no mention of Moonshot AI or the Kimi model in its press release, TechCrunch reports .
However, Lee Robinson, Cursor’s VP of developer training, soon admitted, «Yes, Composer 2 is based on an open source model!» But he added, «Only about a quarter of the computing power spent on the final model is on the base version, the rest is our own training.» As a result, he said, Composer 2’s results in various benchmarks «differ significantly» from Kimi’s.
Robinson also insisted that Cursor’s use of Kimi was in compliance with the terms of the license, a claim that was confirmed by Kimi’s official X account in a subsequent post congratulating Cursor. The post noted that Cursor was using Kimi «as part of an authorized commercial partnership» with Fireworks AI.
«We are proud to have Kimi-k2.5 as the foundation,» Kimi said in a statement. «The way our model has been effectively integrated through further training and high-cost reinforcement learning from Cursor is exactly the kind of open model ecosystem we are excited to support.»
Congratulations to the @cursor_ai team on the launch of Composer 2!
We are proud to see Kimi-k2.5 provide the foundation. Seeing our model integrated effectively through Cursor’s continued pretraining & high-compute RL training is the open model ecosystem we love to support.…
So why not acknowledge the use of Kimi right away? In addition to the reputational inconvenience of not having created the model from scratch, relying on Chinese technology today looks quite ambiguous, given the fierce confrontation between the US and the PRC in the AI race.
Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger admitted, «We made a mistake by not mentioning the Kimi base on our blog from the beginning. We will fix that for the next model.»
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
