On March 4, 2025, Apple introduced a more powerful iPad Air with the M3 chip, designed for Apple Intelligence.
iPad Air with M3 is nearly twice as fast as iPad Air with M1 and up to 3.5 times faster than iPad Air with A14 Bionic. It comes in two sizes—11-inch and 13-inch— and four colors.
Apple also announced a new Magic Keyboard designed specifically for iPad Air to «expand its versatility.» The new iPad Air will run on iPadOS 18 and feature Apple Intelligence, improved cameras, 5G, and compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil.
Apple claims that thanks to its more powerful 8-core processor, the M3 performs 35% faster in multithreaded workflows than the iPad Air with the M1. The M3 is equipped with a 9-core GPU, which speeds up graphics by 40% compared to the M1.
The M3 also brings Apple’s graphics architecture to iPad Air for the first time, with support for dynamic caching, as well as hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing. In graphics-intensive rendering workflows, iPad Air with M3 is 4x faster than iPad Air with M1, delivering more accurate lighting, reflections, shadows, and incredibly realistic gaming effects.
The faster Neural Engine in M3 means iPad Air users will have more AI capabilities in iPadOS. Compared to M1, the Neural Engine in M3 is 60% faster for AI-based workloads.
The company emphasizes that iPad Air was created specifically for Apple Intelligence, a personal artificial intelligence platform that provides useful and relevant information.
In the Photos app, the Cleanup tool lets you quickly remove unnecessary elements from images, and natural language search lets users search for almost any photo or video by simply telling them what they’re looking for.
With Image Wand in the Notes app, users can make notes more visually appealing by simply tracing an Apple Pencil sketch. Users can even trace over empty space in a note, and Image Wand will gather context from the surrounding area to create a matching image that complements the note and makes it more visual.
Apple is offering the 11-inch iPad Air with the M3 chip for $599; the 13-inch model will cost $799. The company has already opened pre-orders for the new product, and sales will begin on Wednesday, March 12.
Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted a short teaser that the company plans to introduce something this week.
«There’s something in the air», the video caption said. «There’s something in the air» is a reference to an ad for the first MacBook Air, which was announced in 2008. Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman also predicted that Apple would announce a MacBook Air with M4, but that hasn’t happened yet.
