Apple is changing its artificial intelligence leadership. Longtime AI chief John Giannandria is stepping down and preparing for retirement, and his place is being taken by a specialist who led the AI division at Microsoft and worked at Google for more than 15 years.
According to Apple, Giannandria is leaving his position as senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy and will serve as an advisor to the company until spring 2026. The new vice president of AI, Amar Subramanya, will report to Craig Federighi and be responsible for Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and the safety and evaluation of AI solutions.
In a press release, Apple recalls that Giannandria joined the company in 2018 and helped build a strong team that developed core models, search, infrastructure and other AI technologies for the iPhone, iPad and Mac ecosystem. Some of his divisions will now be transferred to Sabiha Khan’s operations unit and Eddy Cue’s services direction, to bring them closer to those responsible for hardware and services.
Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft as corporate vice president of AI, where he was responsible for integrating AI models into the company’s products. Prior to that, he spent 16 years at Google, where he led the engineering team behind Gemini Assistant. Apple expects his research and product development experience to help it more quickly translate AI insights into real-world features for users.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement that AI has long been a key part of the company’s strategy, and the addition of a new executive strengthens Craig Federighi’s team, which is responsible for Apple Intelligence and the revamped, more personalized Siri. Amid criticism of the slow pace of AI development in Apple products and aggressive competition from Microsoft and Google, the changes should show that the company is ready to fight more seriously for leadership in the AI market.
