Apple is considering challenging Amazon Ring and other competitors by releasing its own home device that connects to smart locks.
«The smart home remains where Apple could have the biggest impact in 2025. After years of being dominated by Amazon and Google, Apple is trying to make a splash with an AI-powered smart home. The device will have a roughly 6-inch display and a new operating system designed to control your home, run FaceTime and play video», — Bloomberg insider Mark Gurman reports.
According to him, Apple will also release updates for existing home devices next year: the TV set-top box and the HomePod mini smart speaker.
«Apple is developing several related products, including a home security camera that will compete with devices from Google and Logitech, as well as Amazon’s Ring and Blink», — Gurman added.
Also in development at Apple, according to an insider, is another previously unreported home device: a smart doorbell with advanced facial recognition that connects wirelessly to a lock.
The idea is that a doorbell could automatically unlock doors for residents of a home by scanning their faces — just like Face ID lets them into their iPhone.
It’s likely that the doorbell system will work with many third-party locks already on the market that support Apple’s HomeKit protocol, or it’s possible that the company will team up with a specific lock manufacturer to offer a complete system.
A doorbell and lock system with Face ID support would likely compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest.
«In any case, Apple is ready to make an aggressive move into the smart home market after years of concessions to competitors,» the insider concludes.
In addition, according to him, Apple is actively working on adding a number of health-related features to AirPods. These could include a temperature sensor, heart rate monitoring, and technology that tracks a number of physiological indicators.
Previously, Bloomberg expert Mark Gurman predicted that Apple’s strategy of annually introducing a wide range of new technology models in advance could be changed in favor of more spontaneous and point releases in the future.
